Volvo: Volvo 850 - leakage -help!, engine oil cooler, valve cover gasket

Question
Hi Ray - I just had two engine oil cooler lines replaced but unfortunately I still have (other) leaks. It seems since they had my timing belt and water pump changed there is now an oil leak right where the timing belt is located. I had it checked out by the mechanic who did the job and he believed it has nothing to do with the timing belt but it probably is the VC gasket which needs to be replaced for another 950 dollars. I am pretty much through my money now and am not sure if it is not their mistake when replacing the timing belt/seals (in which case I have a warranty). The 'check engine' light has come on twice and in both cases it was a code #P0440 (Evap malfunction). Could you please give me some advice cause this situation is killing me - I love the car but all the trouble is really driving me mad!

Answer
Frank,
There is no way to tell just how long the seals in any car will last. The 850's are known to have rear main oil seals that leak, and front pump seals in tht trans that also leak.
There is not a "valve cover gasket" it is a special sealant that is applied to each half of the cam cover. That could leak, and if it does that is a pretty major undertaking that requires some special tools.
The evap code is

Clogged canister.
Clogged hoses.
Defective EVAP valve (permanently open or shut).

Fault symptoms

Fuel odor from EVAP canister (in warm climate).
Possibly high idling speed. Check this link.
