Volvo: rear suspension shot, rear shocks, decent shape

Question
I have a 1990 960 and it has 180K miles.  The back is drooping and the local mechanic said it's dangerous to drive on the highway and the rear suspension needs totally replaced.  Struts (which is strange b/c I didn't know there were struts in back) springs, etc are all wore out.  He quoted me $2500-$3500 and said don't bother, just get a new car.  Help we love this car it's been so reliable.

Answer
Erica,
The shocks on the rear of your car are called NIVO-MAT shocks and are very expensive. They are a shock that is self adjusting as the load incresses. There are also a lot of rear bushings that may need replacement and they are hard to get at and are costly to replace. If the bushings are in decent shape and only the rear is sagging, replace the rear shocks and see if that will get you a few more miles. If your tech can get a photo of the rear shocks I know of some used ones that might work out fine. Send photo and request to revolvstore@revolvstore.com
