Volvo: check engine lite came on, obd ii, volvo s70

98 volvo s70, driving down the road check engine lite comes
on, able to drive home, engine runs smoothly  no notice of
any mechanical problem. havent changed spart plugs in over
a year. use car about3500 miles a yr. what could be the
problem, disconnected batt and reconn, check engine lite
works normal now. can car be driven even though check
engine lite might come on again and if it does will I da-
magine the engine to keep on driving until seek help.

If and when the light is on there is a fault code in one or more systems. You can only read the codes with a scan tool hooked into the OBD II plug. Without knowing what fault codes are posted in the system there is no way to say if there will be any further damage.
