i've never had any mayor problem with my car, this is a 2.4 with 4 cylinders standard transmission, and last week started leaking the coolant under the drive bets system, this leaking is from the water pump or it could be somtething else? and if it's the water pump, i just need to replace it or i need to change the thermostat and the radiator cap too?, ans the last one, is there any tricky part in the process to change it?

thanks.

Antonio,

Yes, it is most probably the water pump.  I would replace the pump, thermostat and radiator cap together so you have a baseline for maintenance.  Check the belts and hoses too...  Also, do not backflush the radiator with the garden hose as it overpressurizes the system and causes the heater core to fail.  Just drain and fill a couple of times and make sure the water comes out clean when you are done.  Now, refill with 50/50 antifreeza and demineralized water.

Answer
Antonio,

The pump change is easy.  Just get a Haynes service manual from the store and you will have pictures to follow.  I think it is $20 bucks well spent.  Now, here is the process as I remember.  Drain the radiator, loosen the pump pulley bolts and then remove the belts.  Now, remove the pump bolts and take the pump off.  Clean the mating surface and then install the new pump.  I like to use 3M weatherstrip adhesive to hold the gasket on the pump so it makes installation easier.
