Volvo: Check Engine Light - on & off, dash board, car trip

Question
My light turned off the next day and hasn't reappeared since.  I called the dealer and they said that it's probably a symptom to something else.  I also put in gas that day, so it could be me forgetting to turn my gas cap all the way?  How would I know if that's the cause.

My uncle, who's a mechanic for another car company, thinks it might be an electrical issue, since the light comes on one day and disappears the next?

Any advice before I take it into the dealer tomorrow?  Any advice for them not taking advantage of me and my problem?

Question -
My check engine light came on a week ago and when I turned my
car back on in the morning, the light was off.  Now today, my check
engine light came back on after a long car trip.  What could cause it
to come on, then turn back off?  Is this a glitch in my dash board?
(My service light cannot be reset and is permanently on and I refuse
to pay $3000 for them to replace the board).
Thanks

Shell,
It could mean that there is a code in the system. You need to get to ashop that you can have the codes reads and any repairs made. How does the car run? It is always possible that there is a glitch in system. You will know more after the codes are read.

Answer
Shell,
The way to begin is to read the codes left in the control unit. Depending on what code(s) there are you may be able to determine if the cause of the check engine light was your fault or not. If the codes determine that the MAF is at fault then I would say you had nothing to do with setting the code. If on the other hand the code showed tank leakage small or large leak then you maybe at fault. Is the light on at this time? Is the car running good? If the light in not on and the car runs good you might just want to wait and see if there are further symtoms to warrant a trip to the dealer.
