Volvo: Gear Shift, volvo 240, test light

I have a Volvo 240(1993) and the shifter is locked.  Can't use the override button either.  Please advise

Check the fuses making sure that all are ok. See if the shifter bushings are good and not to much play in them. Pull off the cover plate use a test light and see if there is power at the small solenoid and that all the wires are intact and not broken. Make sure that when you push the over ride button the key is on and you have the brake pedal pushed.
