The valve tapping that you are asking about is possibly the valve lifters. One or more has lost the ability to "pump-up" and is noisey. Lifters are what the cam pushes on to open the valves, they are a small hydralic units that uses oil pressure to operate. That is a pretty big job and will run about $1500.00. Get other quotes before getting any work done.
