Motorcycle Repair: CBX1000 queries., michelin tyre, vacuum leaks

Question
Hi Jan,

Further to my questions on the 20 February, the carbies have stopped leaking as hoped and the starter seems to be freeing up now that I have started and run the engine (as you thought).  For some reason, it seems to only want to start on full choke even when warmed up (so be it - they're the boss!!).  I'm about to register and take the bike for a good ride which should see even further improvment.  My questions,

* What RPM should I have at 60 mp/h
* What octane new unleaded fuel should I use (premium I suspect)
* Do I need to add the lead replacement fluid in the fuel
* What fuel consumption should I expect from a stock standard bike

I'll be starting on the 1100RC in a few weeks but it only has 6,000 miles on it and in pristine condition (never been wet and still has original front Michelin tyre - to changed soon of course) so I don't think I'll be troubling you with any problems from it.

Many thanks

Steve (Tamworth - New South Wales - AUSTRALIA)

Answer
If the bike needs choke to start even when warm, then perhaps there are some vacuum leaks.  Check the carb boots to the cylinder head, and ensure no cracking and that they are still pliable.  The two needles should both be at the top in top gear from my recollection, but this depends if your gearing and tire sizes are stock.  Use regular fuel, no lead additive required, it is more important to use clean, fresh fuel.  Stock bike fuel consumption numbers are published with a wide scatter, but expect about 120-140 miles between fill-ups; depending on your riding style.
