Volvo: volvo engine, volvo v70, ems code

Question
Ray, MORE GOOD NEWS< the mechanic says there is very low compression, like 30 pounds in all cylinders and number 2 leaks down severly, will not hold compression. He said there was a different plug in # 2 cyl. and the electrode was longer. I asked about the timing belt but he said he didn't think so. The car was running fine, this was not a slow progression. They are acting like it needs an engine. I have the car back here now. Any clues?

Ray,
Hope I am not becoming a pain. Now the car won't start. It spins as if the timing is off, perhaps the belt? You know the sound. I talked to one technician at the shop, said the gear sensor won't affect the way it runs. They can't even look at it till next week.Is the timing belt a difficult job? I haven't located a repair manual, anywhere to get info online? I have alot of experience with mechanics, its just all these sensors and such drive me nuts.        Thanks again       Jim

I have a 99 volvo v70 non turbo, 2.5 L.105,000 miles. Getting alot of lights coming on. 1st got EMS code for small leak. Volvo dealer already fixed small line but light came on again, am fed up with them. Now winter mode light comes on and blinks, then goes off. brake light and abs light comes on some times. Wife says car won't accelerate when these come on . then they go off and car is ok. The only code I get now is output speed sensor, is this abs sensor or some other. I want to sell this car soon!!!!

Answer -
Jim,
Leak from the fuel tank system? If the code is still there maybe there is still a small leak, these systems are sometimes tough to diagnosis a leak.
The ABS should have nothing to do with any sensors that are tranmission related. Check for codes in the trans. The problem that you have described sounds like a gear position sensor that is starting to go bad. Code 313
The ABS control units go bad and causes the light to come on. Common codes are 314, 324, rear wheel sensors. There is a crack that occures in the PC board of the control unit and sets these codes.

My code reader is an ACTRON homeowner version from a store, the numbers are different..... Also, the speedo doesn't work when the lights come on. The check engine light is on all the time. ( the service light is on also but I know that is different. Haven't succeeded in getting that off yet. I read the codes again, key off I get output speed sensor circuit, no signal. Key on I get a variety of codes, the small leak is still there plus one number that isn't even in my book. I am at a loss. I realize this is sketchy info. If you have no suggestion I will have to bite the bullet and take it to a shop.  Thanks for your help  Jim

Jim,
With all the different code that you are getting I think that a visit to your favorite shop would be best. They should be able to reset the service light and read the other codes in the car. Now what I do is read the codes and record them then clear all codes and drive the car to see what code if any come back and deal with those. Sometimes one fault code will trigger another that is misleading. At times with certain codes looking at the repair manual it gives repair advice based on, was this set with another code? Hence the reason for recording the codes first read.
You should be able to reset the service light.
Proceed as follows to reset the service reminder indicator (SRI):

Key in Position I
Ignition position I
Press and hold in the reset button for the trip odometer
While holding button in switch the Ignition to position II
Ignition position II
The service reminder indicator (SRI) starts flashing when the reset button for the trip odometer has been pressed for 10 seconds
Release the reset button for the trip odometer within 5 seconds. The instrument gives an audible signal when resetting has succeeded.
Note!    If the trip meter reset button is not released within 5 seconds the indicator is not reset. However the indicator will stop flashing.

Jim,
A timing belt job is not to diffcult. Be sure to follow the book and turn the engine over by hand after installing to double check that it is in time. At the time you do the belt consider also replacing tensioner and idler pulleys and the water pump.

Answer
Jim,
Have the car taken to a shop that works on Volvos all the time. There are certain problems and things that happen with a certain type of car and only someone with experience on that car will know. My experience has shown that a car with 100k to 110k should not have low compression, if there has been reasonable care taken to it. Or if a major breakdown has not happend. Experience has also shown that a car that has had a starting problem for some time, could have low compression because the cylinders have been washed down with all the fuel that has been sprayed in. The remark your tech made about the timing belt "I don't think so" makes me feel that there is limited experience on his part with a Volvo.
