Volvo: air conditioning, blown fuse, climate system

Question
How do I check out the control head? The a/c light comes on. The recirculation light comes on. The 4 fan settings work, although I did have to replace the fan resistor recently.  All the vent dampers work.

97 850 non-turbo. A/C clutch engages and disengages with a/c switch. With switch in on position, however, it just stays engaged. Pressure shows steady 30 PSI.  It will disengage when I disconnect the low pressure switch. Thoughts?

Also have 95 850 non-turbo where the a/c clutch will not engage.  Has about 80 p.s.i. pressure. No voltage at low pressure switch connector. Thoughts?

Steve,
On your 97, A/C should operate with the switch. When the switch on compressor stays engaged, ok normal. It will stay engaged until the evap starts to freeze, ususally quite a while. 30 psi on the low side is good. When you unplug the low pressure switch there is no longer power to the compressor, it will stop.
The 96, go to the low press switch and see if there is power (with A/C on) at at least one connector there. If not maybe the control head, blown fuse, etc. If you have power at one terminal, jump the two and see if the comp comes on. If it does that would indicate a system low on freon or defective switch.

Steve,
The control head is the A/C panel inside the car. The one with all the controls on it. It sends the power out to the compressor via the low pressure switch, operates the fan, adjusts the temp, etc.

Answer
Steve,
Your car has the ability to read and monitor any codes in the climate system. Find someone with the proper scanner to check the system. Do all functions on the control head work? Do the two small lights below the push buttons flash for about 20 seconds just after you start the car? If your answers are "yes" and "no", that would more that likely indicate it is working fine.
