Volvo: 1996 850T Running Hot, radiator cooling fan, magnetic clutch

Question
We just had a new radiator installed in our 1996 850T wagon (about 100K miles) and took our first long-distance trip this weekend (1,800 miles from Dallas to Cape Cod, MA, 2006 Memorial day).  We noticed that occasionally when the temp gage was a little high (about 2:45, well below the red line) that the A/C momentarily shut down.  It came back soon.  Is this normal?

Answer
Tom,
There is an over heat switch in the compressor so if the compressor gets to hot it will cut off. Also if you are in stop and go traffic and the radiator cooling fan is not operating the high side A/C pressure will be so high that the compressor will also be turned off. If the freon level is low the compressor will cycle on and off. There are also compressors that the clutch gap is to great and the magnetic clutch cannot engage the compressor. In that case the compressor needs to be replaced.
