Volvo: volvo check engine light flashing, volvo 850 glt, volvo 850

I own a 97 volvo 850 GLT. The check Engine light has been on for some time, but the car was runnig great until recently. Now it runs poorly, sputtering and losing a lot of power. when i give it a little gas it get even worse and the check engine light flashes. What does this mean?

The check engine light indicates that there is a code that is stored in one of the cars control units. Those codes need to be read, they will indicate in what direction to look for the problem. You will need to get someone with a scanner to access the sysem and read those codes. Once they are read and recorded that should leed to a diagnosis and repair.
