BMW Repair: 1986 325 no spark, motronic dme, coil ignition system

Question
hey mike,
i've an 86 325 it turns stong but doesnt seem to have any fire. my haynes descibes 2 different ignition systems, the l-jetronic and the motronic
it implies only the 318's in 84 85 had the L-jetronic. these are apparently equiped with a tci-i system.(transistorized coil ignition system).so since i've an 86 325 i should have the motronic DME system(digital motor electronics).
i've pulled the coil and it has a sticker that indicates the coil is transistorized.
if i do have the DME system should the coil be transistor or are all coils transistor thanks for any help

Answer
Check the connector behind the starter and under the intake manifold, these often get wet and cause a no spark condition.  The other option is to check the coil.  Do you get 12v power on the power terminals for the coil? if not the problem is most likely somewhere else, check the fuse, and see if it has troubles starting with it on a charger or with a known good battery, it may not be offering enough amps.  It could also be the ignition relay or a bad ground.  you need to start testing!
to determine the correct coil for your car you could go online and figure out what part number is appropriate for your car.
