Volvo: 1985 volvo fly wheel problem, fly wheel, thin pieces

Question
My father in law gave me a 1985 volvo and I had to replace he radiator, after that the starter died I had to replace that when I got to the mechanic He told me the fly wheel is messed up so now when i start the car it makes a blade hitting metal sound. Did the mechanic do something wrong, this problem never occured before the mechanic touched the car.

Answer
YES the starter has thin pieces of metal called shims that put it closer or farther away from the flywheel, tell him to do it right and adjust the shims.  to force him to tell the truth ask him how many shims were in there and where are they and what is the clearance measurement for your car...don't go to him anymore, he is quite incompetent with volvos anyway
