Volvo: 98 V70 AWD center bearing / tranny shifting, propeller shaft, rear propeller

Question
105,000 miles and always Volvo dealer serviced. About 1,000 miles ago it started as a low speed howl and now its a high speed vibration. We're told that the rear propeller shaft center bearing is junk. $1.K to fix!

First ?: Can a good drive line shop replace this bearing and how difficult is the shaft to remove?

2nd?: Since vibration started the tranny shifts with a 'BANG'. Is this caused by the bad bearing and will it damage the tranny?

Answer
Hello Steve! It is best to let an experienced Volvo Technician do that job. Any work on the all wheel drive system requires specialized knowledge and special tools. The angle drive and the viscous coupling are the most common parts. The parts alone are very expensive.
