Volvo: 2001 Volvo S40 1.9 Turbo, 2001 volvo s40, volvo s40

Question
My daughter just bought this car, 40,000 miles.
The remote doesn't work (I tried a new battery) - I saw some on eBay with the same numbers on the back - but it must have to be programed somehow or everyone could open everyone else's cars - how do I do that?  She spent all her savings on the car and she's only 19 - I'm trying to help, but I'm a single mom and it's tough.  I am quite handy around cars, but I don't have any experience with Volvos.

Also - her check engine light came on right after she took possession, the seller said something about getting gas with the key in the ignition and said it would go off after about 50 miles -it's been that and it's still on - again, is there anything I can do myself?

Thank you VERY much,
Donna

Answer
Hello Donna! The remote will need to be prgrammed by the dealer or a Volov specialist. Special tools and software are needed to program it. You also need special tools to read the fault code stored in the ECM. That wiil tell you why the check engine light is on. There are literally 100 reasons why the light can be on. They are right about getting gas. The car must be turned off before the gas cap is removed or the check engine light will be set.
