Volvo: 1999 S70 AWD Keyless Remote, keyless remotes, independent volvo

Question
The guts of my keyless remote fell out of the unit last week! I'm wondering if and how I can reprogram a used unit of the same part # that I can buy on eBay.

My independent Volvo mechanic says that for programming Volvo keyless remotes, some model years require a PIN # that came with the remote, while other model years need the car VIN#, while for still other model years the remote can be programmed simply by turning the ignition on and off a few times (as you have suggested to others on the allexperts board)

What's the correct approach for reprogramming the keyless remote for a 1999 S70 AWD? Will I need a PIN# for a used unit of the proper part # that I buy on eBay?  Will I have to have a dealer to do the programmiing or can I?

Thanks for your expert reply.

Answer
Hello Burt! You will need special tools and a new software download in order to program the remote control. If your mechanic is a Volvo expert, he should have the means to get the new software and program the remote. If not, you will need to make a trip to a local dealer to have it done.
