Volvo: 2000 s40 disabled ignition or key?, remote keyless entry, steering wheel

Question
Hi Jason,

I have a 2000 s40 turbo that won't let me start it.  After never having a problem, suddenly the key will not fully turn to starting position.  It will turn to the stage that the battery kicks in so the radio, windows, lights, etc. work, but will turn no further.  The remote keyless entry still works.  I made sure it was in park, turned the steering wheel, and charged the battery, but nothing changes.  My guess is that the ignition is disabled by the security system or possibly something with the transmission that it is not recognizing it is park?!  Is there a way to fix this? The dealer's service technician suggested to charge the battery (done), and click the key fob 3 times, but nothing has helped.  I am trying to avoid having to tow it to a dealer b/c it will not start and was running beautifully last night.  Thanks.

Jennifer

Answer
If you have already checked that the car is in park and your foot is on the brake and it still doesn't start, I would think a few things.  Either the ignition coil itself is malfunctioning (where you put in the key), or one of the sensors from the transmission or brake petal is not working and the computer thinks they are not engaged and won't start the engine.  I would have the ignition and those sensors checked.
