Driving & Driving Test Tips: Car Seats, speed collisions, volvo saab

Question
QUESTION: Car seats are provided with head rests and seat belts but there is no support for the neck. Why has no neck support been provided? Also while traveling as a co-driver it is not very comfortable. This problem of seats is also there when you travel in buses.

ANSWER: Car seats are designed with the aspect of allowing you to sit in a vehicle and provide some safety features as required by law.  the higher the cost of a vehicle the more comfortable the seats will be.  American vehicles have traditionally not had head and neck support even when there is a "head rest", and it really is not effective for stopping injury in low speed collisions.  you can buy some back support devices and an attachment for the head rest to make it more comfortable and safer.

the ultimate is a contour seat bought just to fit your body, but a bit expensive.

QUESTION: My problem is about neck support not being there particularly for the passengers which will add to their comfort. Why is this aspect not being considered by the designers. This aspect of comfort also requires to be looked into for passengers of buses.

Answer
That is beyond my ability to get done.  Auto manufacturers and designers work for large corporations and they don't listen to a single voice unless it is a government agency speaking.  You should direct your comments to NHTSA or car manufacturers.  If you don;t like it someone else might have also lodged the same complaint, if enough complaints come in there may be action taken.

Not all manufacturers are bad.  Try a Volvo, SAAB, Lexus, Cadillac, BMW, Mercedes, and some others that do have good ergonomics associated with their seats.
