Driving & Driving Test Tips: Queries on safe driving, rush hours, typical speed

Question
Hi
Would appreciate your help on some of the queries I have on driving. I typically drive a sedan car.
1. What is the safe distance between intersection or any other cross walk and front bumper. I usually keep it as one Foot but what if some one rear ends the car and as a result the car at the cross section moves forward and hits a pedestrian?

2. When waiting for Left Turn on a permissive green signal is it mandatory for the first car in the Left Turn (First Lane) to move ahead and enter green signal. I prefer to not do so during rush hours and get honks from behind.

3. If I enter an intersection when the light is yellow and immediately turn red afterwards what is the right thing to do ? Drive through the intersection or apply brakes and reverse?

4. If I enter intersection when the signal is red, then realize I made a mistake, what should I do ?

5. What should be a typical speed while taking a right turn on a green signal? I am watch full of pedestrian crossing so keep the speed at around 10 mph and get honked at.

6. At times the Sign says "School Zone Max Speed 25 MPH when Children are present". How do I identify the right time to drive below 25 MPH.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
1. You should not enter the crosswalk with any portion of your vehicle until you have the right of way.

2. You don't have to pull out into the intersection but it is the correct thing to do so that people behind you will have time to make the turn also.

3. If the light turns red and you are already in the intersection you have the right of way and should drive thru.

4. Attempt to stop and or continue thru depending on the circumstances.  Try to not get hit or not hit someone else.

5. You can turn at what ever speed is safe to do so.  10 mph is a good speed.

6. This sign is for school hours and when there are children present.  If it is at night or a holiday it does not apply.
