4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: fuel pump relay, fuel pump relay, spark plug wire

Question
I have a 1997 gmc jimmy that just quit running today. I think it's the fuel pump but don't want to spend $300 on it to find out that it's a $10 relay. My question is of the relay went out I wouldn't have any fuel pressure would I. Cause when I removed the fuel I had pressure on it. if the pressure is low will the truck still crank any help would be great thanks Jon.  please return ASAP

Answer
Well Jon,

First of all make sure the engine is firing, and then it depends on the fuel pump pressure as if it would actually crank. However if you can press the valve stem on the fuel line and fuel comes out more than likely it is not going to be fuel, it is either going to be fire or timing chain. You can stick a spark plug into a spark plug wire and have some one start it and see if it sparks kind of hold it close to metal to make sure it sparks.

Also if it sounds different than normal when trying to start then it possibly jumped timing.

Thanks
