4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: pinon shaft, dodge ram 1500, rear axel

Question
i have a 98 dodge ram 1500 4x4. I am replacing the seals and bearings on the rear axel. I am having a problem getting the pinon shaft out. I did remove the shaft lock bolt. I have pounded on the shaft pretty hard, and it has moved out about half an inch but it will go no further. Any advice you can give me would be great. Thank you

Answer
Terry,

Be careful pounding on the shaft.  There may be a keeper, or clip that needs to be removed for the shaft to slide out.  Some of these take special tools to pull them out.

You should purchase a Chilton's or a Hayne's repair manual for your
vehicle.  They can be purchased at most auto parts stores for, around $20.

They have the information you need, along with basic trouble shooting, and
repairs, including nut sizes and torque settings.  If any special tools
are needed the manuals will list them.  These manuals are designed for a
year or range of years for specific vehicles, and are invaluable if you
are planning on doing any repairs, or maintenance yourself.
