my check engine light is on and the diagnostic tool says the #4 cylinder is misfiring. which one is the #4 cylinder. it is a straight inline 6 cylinder

Hi Larry,

Fourth one back, starting from the front of the engine. Be sure to check the coil extensions on the end of the rail (the part that attaches to the spark plug) -- they have a tendency to arc to the cylinder head instead of the plug! Too much of that, and the coil rail fails.
