Suzuki: 98 Sidekick Sport (1.8L) Timing Chain Replacement Needed?, suzuki sidekick sport, timing chain replacement

Question
Hi,

I have read that the timing chain on a 1998 Suzuki Sidekick sport (1.8L) does not need replacement as part of regular maintenance, rather, it lasts the life of the engine. Is this true?

If not, when do you recommend replacing it?

PS the manual I have only mentions replacement on the NON sport model (1.6L).

Thanks for your help!

Roger

Answer
With the valve cover off  try to lift the chain off the sprocket in the top center.
If two or three adjacent links move more than one fourth of the distance across the chain roller on the sprocket on each side of the lifted link when you lift as hard as your fingers will grasp, the chain AND sprockets are worn and should be replaced. It's sort of a judgement call, and if there's barely visible movement, you are probably ok.  If you replace , make certain you replace the tensioner and all the chain guide rails and tensioner pressure foot - the whole chain mechanism.
Usually, the chain will last the life of the motor.  A rattle from the chain housing area at idle is usually an audible symptom you need to check the chain.  With newer engines going 200-300k and more, chain replacement before overhaul is becoming more common.
