Suzuki: Fuel gauge and temp gauge not working, suzuki samurai, fuel gauge

Question
Hi Dave, We just spent the whole day trying to figure this one out. We have a suzuki Samurai 1988 model. We have a new sending unit, the yellow with red wire which goes from the dash to the fuel tank has no power (was told it is not supposed to have power, is that true. Now this wire goes into the dash (wire number 3) How is this gauge grounder and how does it get it's power so it reads on dash? We did connect power to the yellow /red wire from the park lights to see what will happen and the gauge shot right up. How do we ground it? If possible would you call us at . God Bless

Answer
Gas and fuel gauges supply power through the gauge to the respective sender.  The temp, or fuel level causes the appropriate sender to vary the ground, thus varying the needle position.  If this makes sense, then you will see how it's supposed to work and can figure out how/why it's not working.  If this doesn't make sense, get back to me again.
