Suzuki: SJ410 - Front wheel play, tough gear, type seal

Question
Hi David,

I have a SJ410 that has very slight play on both front wheels. Initially I thought it was the bearings that needed adjusting but after adjusting the locking bolts as the manual describes the play remained. Having now removed the bearings (& housing) I can see if I grab the knuckle housing and move it up & down the play seems to still be there. I see there is a felt type seal around the back of the knuckle, and the play is most noticeable there. Could that we worn to the extent that it is causing this? (It's not leaking any grease). Or is there another area which needs adjusting? The workshop manual I have doesnt go into much detail around the subject.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Chad

Answer
Actually, the play you have is from the bearings above and below the felt seal.
Go to http://www.izook.com and find a parts source listed in the <links> section.  I'm personally fond of HAWK, ROCKY ROAD, ROADLESS GEAR, and TRAIL TOUGH GEAR.
You should get a pair of front knuckle rebuild kits.
Is the workshop a real SUZUKI factory manual, or a Haines,Chilton, or similar aftermarket book?  Even though they're pricey,(about $100) the factory book shows how to rebuild a differential, transmission, transfer case, front knuckle, etc. when you think about the kind of money to be saved by doing it right the first time, it's not a bad deal.  I can't recommend the factory manual enough.
Let me know how it goes
