Suzuki: Suzuki Esteem, rear drum brakes, drum brakes

Question
'01 Suzuki Esteem GL, auto, sedan, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes. After starting and putting the vehicle in reverse, the vehicle doesn't seem to stop. I had to press hard on the brake pedal to slow down/stop. What seems to be problem?

This is one of the "got to be there" kind of problems.
Look at the shop finder at IATN.NET to find a tech in your area.
One thing that comes to mind could be easily checked out by you.  Does is stop equally well gouing backwards both in and out of reverse gear?  Could the fact that it's in reverse gear be the major problem?
