Suzuki: Suzuki Samuri transmission, suzuki samuri, bolt heads

Question
Help.  My Suzuki samuri is stuck in third gear.  Can I fix this myself?

Answer
There is a pin locating the shifter at the top of the transmission.  It can "jump", allowing the end of the shift lever opposite the end you grab to jump out of the "gates".  If you remove the shift boot, and look at the top of the trans where the stick goes in, there are some 6mm (10mm wrench size) bolts holding the stick in. if you remove them, you can get the stick out.  It may be necessary to remove the 8mm(12mm bolt heads) bolts for the next larger piece to gain access to the selector rods.  each one has a slot cut in it that the shift lever engages.  Usually the stick has jumped out of one of the grooves, and all you have to do is use a fairly large screwdriver to pop all the groves back in alignment, and reinstall the shifter.  Go to izook.com, and look at the links.  There you will be able to find a new bolt with the appropriate pin end, and a new cup bushing made of "sterner stuff" than the oem part.  It will solve your shifting problem permanently.  This is assuming that there is not a terminal lubrication/mechanical internal problem.  Unless it's been making a loud howling/grinding noise lately, it's improbable.
