Tips on Buying Cars: 1980 volvo 240, volvo 240 dl, volvo 240

Question
Hi, I was looking into a 1980 Volvo 240 DL, 4 spd. w/overdrive, that has 184k miles on it.  It apparently has new Timing belt (New seals), Rack and Pinion, Water pump, Radiator & thermostat , Struts/Shocks, Muffler/Exhaust,  and Fuel pumps.  It is selling for $1800.  I was wondering if this would be a good buy, or if it would be a money pit.  What kind of reliabilty do old volvo's have, and how easy would it be to get replacement parts?

Answer
Hi Nicholas
It sounds like a good deal as you don't get much today for $ 1800. The Volvo is a high rated well made vehicle and I have come across many with excess of 300K.

However would I personally buy it, sorry to say no, and getting parts is not the reason, the maintenance factor should something break down the cost factor will be above average and dealing with a vehicle 27 years old ? its much to big a risk.

Buying a vehicle in your price range its buyers beware and some homework on your part is needed in order to not have a lemon parked in your driveway, if your still considering the Volvo or anything else you may come across as a first step go to this link on my website     http://www.usedcartips.org/TESTDRI.html   and if vehicle passes your inspection then go to main page and study the 10 steps how to buy a car, I don't expect you to become an expert overnight, but by study it will lessen the fear getting a lemon.

Forget shopping online or dealers for a car in this price range... Check your local community newspapers and supermarket billboards, its your best bet and you may just find a diamond for your bucks.

Good Luck
