Tips on Buying Cars: How to pick a good car, gabi gabi, mitsubishi eclipse

Question
Dear Clark,
My father's old BMW has basically died. He was in an accident and the auto repair company says it can't be repaired. This is alright since the insurance is super high on that car and my mom thinks he needs a new car anyway. Now, he knows he should get a new one but all he wants to look at is ANOTHER old BMW very similar to his. Both Mom and I think he needs something smaller(less tank like) and something with affordable insurance. The reason I'm asking this question? I'm 15 and whatever he gets is what I'm going to end up driving. I had MY eyes on the Mitsubishi Eclipse, but that's just my opinion. He's tricky since all he wants is another BMW. If you have any ideas I know my Mom and I would be most highly grateful. Thank you for your time! -Gabi

Answer
Gabi,

You have several problems.  Fisrt, if your father is anything like mine good luck in getting him to change what he wants.  Second, look to consumer reports, or something like that, to get an idea on reliability ratings.  Honda, Toyota, and Nissan are all good cars to consider.  I would look at a Honda Accord.  The EX model might have some amenities that your Dad is used to, such as leather and a sun roof.  Other than that it is trail and error.  Good luck with your Dad!
