Tips on Buying Cars: trans am, independent mechanic, smokey and the bandit

Question
I recently seen a 1976 trans am for sale. The car is need of work. It has rust(it's  rusted through) on both sides on the front fender. It has a 455h.o.,rebuilt engine, matching numbers and still has all the orginal parts included for $4,000 firm. I think it's a good deal, because i believe you can buy the fenders for it. My husband isn't really sure of it. I would really like to know if it would be a good buy or not.

Answer
Hi Sarah
You must have seen the movie Smokey and The Bandit i think that was a 76 or 77 Trans Am, a mean machine and a fun movie...
If you really want an old classic here is how i would approch...Take it to a body shop for a full inspection the fenders are rusted through and can be fixed or replaced no problem but what about the floor panels and under carriage? thats why you must take for an inspection...
From there i would want an independent mechanic to check engine...
Now you add $ 4000. plus body work and mechanical and figure your investment...I assume you have the cash as the bank will not finance anything that old
You cant really put a price on a vehicle that old it comes down to condition and what someone is willing to pay

I would walk away from the deal if i was not allowed the inspections...go to my website  http://usedcartips.bravehost.com/
and navigate to TAKE VEHICLE TO MECHANIC it will give you an understanding what you want done
It is a muscle car and price of insurance is another area to investigate
Good luck
