We are going to help our son purchase a used vehicle that will be used for commuting to work and transporting their two small children under 3. We are leaning towards a 4 door sedan that is dependable and safe. Our budget is $5000 or less.  Any tips you can provide us on what type/year of cars to focus on and things to look for will be greatly appreciated.

You are somewhat limited with a budget of $5000...But if that is max i would look for a Ford Escort with low miles or a Ford Focus, if you can find one in that range. Just make sure you do a CarFax to make sure it hasn't been wrecked or a branded title...Feel free to ask any more questions as they come up...GOOD LUCK!
