Tips on Buying Cars: Ownership of new vehicle, new mexico dmv, physical possession

Question
I recently signed paperwork at a dealer in New Jersey to purchase a new car.  I informed the dealer that the sale hinged on their ability to register it in New Mexico.  I gave them a 17 day time frame.  Per New Mexico DMV, whom I contacted, this was more than enough time.  The dealer said no problem.  This was a 100% finance so no trade in or cash changed hands.  I never took possession since the car was not registered.  The finance guy handling the registration is either really new or just slow and it appears the registration might not be done in time.  Do I have to go through with the sale even though they were told of the need of a New Mexico registration and I never took possession? This is in New Jersey

Answer
Jennifer,

Sorry about the delay in answering your question, but thank you for the question.  No, you do not have to go thru the contract since you have not taken delivery.  You are not the legal owner until you take physical possession of the vehicle.
