Tips on Buying Cars: Help,im getting the run around, lease purchase contract, repo

Question
I am in a lease/purchase contract at a tote the note lot in texas. My car was at said lot having some repairs made and the mechanic broke the shifter plate inside the car. They did not inform me of this and I found out when i got in car while picking it up.They told me they "tried to glue it" but have one on order since it wouldn't hold. They never had one on order and are going to be out about $300 to fix it.3 weeks later still broken and they say they are looking for a less expensive way to correct and will let me know. Can I withhold payment until this is fixed since they broke it to begin with?

Answer
Ashely,

Thanks for your question.  Legally you have to make the payment or they can repossess the vehicle.  The fact that they broke something on your car is a completely different and separate issue then you making payment on the car.  You have to make that payment in order to maintain the credit you have with them, and to avoid a repo on your credit.  Secondly, on the issue of how they are planning on fixing it, simply do not accept the work until you are satisfied with it.  They will eventually fix it correctly just to get you out of their hair so to speak.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
