Tips on Buying Cars: Malibu, 2008 malibu, wiper blade

Question
Paul, I have an embarrassing question. I bought a new 2008 Malibu last year. I was hoping for a 6 cylinder. The window sticker said it was a 6 cylinder. The salesman said it was a 4 cylinder because GM decided to put a 4 cylinder engine with a 6-speed auto transmission. I'm pleased with the car. It has some pep for a 4 cylinder. I bought some wiper blade for it recently at a well known auto parts store. When they looked up the vehicle, it listed 2008 Malibu LTZ as a 6 cylinder car. It's been yrs since I've done any work under the hood. Now I know why. I raised the hood and was completely lost - couldn't see a plug wire, distributor or anything familiar. How can I tell if I have a 4 or 6 cylinder? Is there something in the VIN number that tells me? Thanks for your time.

Answer
Dear Ed,

Don't be embarrassed about your question. With all of the engine covers and advanced technology, its hard to tell these days.

There are some ways to determine if your vehicle has a 4 Cylinder or 6 Cylinder:

(a) Go to www.carfax.com and enter your VIN, this should tell you which engine you have.  There is a free version of the Carfax to give you an indication.

(b) Do you still have the window sticker?  You should give that a check.

(c) One last method, but I am not sure if your vehicle has this.  Usually there is a plate for label in the engine room, usually on the radiator bridge or at the door frame of the drivers door which has describes the vehicle type and usually an engine size.  You may want to check.

(d) Another way is to take it to a dealer's service department.  They should be able to verify it fairly quickly.

(e) One last way is to ask your insurance company since your insurance rate is based on engine size and performance.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,

Paul
