Tips on Buying Cars: How to make my car have an easier steering wheel to turn, acura integra, steering columns

Question
i have hurt my hands at work, and have great nerve pain while driving.

do you know how i can i have a car modified to make the steering wheel easier to turn.
i was thinking to have a shop drill out the inlets on the steering assembly.  But i don't know anyone that knows enough about this to tell me how to explain it to a shop, or if it would even work.
i have an 97 acura integra if it matters.
or could a exchange the whole steering column for an aftermarket one.  if so, who makes the lighter steering columns

thank you

Answer
To my knowledge, there are no after market steering columns produced and even if there were, the column has nothing to do with steering effort.

I do know that the Honda Civic and Accord have lighter steering effort than most Acuras.  As the Integra and the Civic are based on similar platforms, it is possible that a Civic steering rack may work on that your Integra.  The only way to tell is to go to a steering rack re manufacturer in your area and look at the two side by side.  They may be the same externally but have different internal valving which affects effort.

You could also try a knob that attaches to the steering wheel.  They used to be very popular before power steering was invented.  These should be available from any supplier of driving products designed for folks with disabilities.
