Tips on Buying Cars: buying a new vehicle, downpayments, approved loan

Question
Hello. I always have got a pre approved loan through my local credit union before car shopping. Yet every dealer I go to wants to know what my down payment will be. Why is this question even asked? It seems if anyone should be asking this question it should be my bank. Also, I like most people buying a new vehicle feel like we are going to get ripped off in the end. Could you give me some "what to look for or ask for" suggestions. Just anything you think a buyer needs to know. Thank you. Mark

Answer
Mark, a salesperson is taught that cash is king. They always make more money on downpayments. I would never put money down on a vehicle. $1000 will only drop your payment about $25.
Just find out the invoice cost on a vehicle and offer that. Always negotiate your interest rate. Call ahead, get ahold of a young kid, set an appointment. Do your research and you will be fine.
