Tips on Buying Cars: New Honda Civic, honda civic coupe, 2008 honda civic

Question
Hi,
I'm thinking about buying a 2008 Honda Civic Coupe DX which has an MSRP for $15,610.  if i go to the dealer and he shows that as being the price, is that what i'm expected to pay, or do people normally say, i'll give, say, $14,000?  i never bought a new car before.  don't know if it's like when you buy eggs and just pay the price or if you're supposed to make an offer like when buying a house.
thanks!
John

Answer
Hi John,

Great question! Be prepared if you do make an offer, if they accept your offer...that you're ready to purchase. The purchase of a vehicle is an expense and you should do your homework.

I would recommend to do some shopping on the Internet. You can research the Civic you want and then start getting some prices within a 20-30 mile radius of from your home. It's convenient to purchase close at home and of course you will want to find a dependable, reputable service department to maintain your car.

So, again...once you've decided on which trim level you want...correspond with the Internet departments at each of the dealerships. Some dealerships will give you the pricing with taxes and tags on the road. Some dealerships will quote you a ridiculously low price just to get you into the store so they can up-sell you.

Take your time, drive the vehicle you want to earn. And be prepared to make an offer you can back up or be prepared to walk when they don't give you the price you want. Car dealers need to sell a car more then you need to buy one. If they don't accept your offer, make sure you have your phone handy around the end of the month. Expect a call.

Hope this helps John and good luck!

Doug
