Tires: Fix-A-Flat, tire sealant, canon copier

Question
I recently wrote the company that makes "Fix-A-Flat" (below) and they responded. Do you agree with their response? Not sure if I should believe the tire dealer or them. Thanks

"I've heard from more than one source, including places that sell and repair tires, that Fix-a-Flat should not be used because it ruins the inside of the tire. Assuming you don't think that, can you tell me why it doesn't or why that's the reputation it has?"

their answer:
"Dear Consumer; Thank you for your interest in our product. The Fix-A-Flat product does no harm to the tire or the wheel. It is a water based product that can be cleaned from the inside of the tire in order that the appropriate repairs can be performed. Many tire sales facilities do not want to perform this cleaning or prefer to sell more tires, as a result they "claim" that the tire can not be repaired. This is untrue."

Answer
Lee,

First, the term "Fix-a-Flat" is frequently used to cover all the spray-in sealants, so asking the company with that name doesn't really cover the entire spectrum of products.  It would be like asking Xerox, why a Canon copier doesn't make good xerox's.

Second, many of these sealants aren't water based, and they can cause all sorts of problems.

And third, they should have mentioned that they are actively pursuing trying to distinguish between their product and the fact that the generic tire sealant is identified with their name (assuming that is true).  If they aren't doing it, not only are they perpetuating the problem, but they could lose their copyright.

So I think their response is shallow.
