Tires: tire size, speedometer accuracy, replacement tires

Question
can i put 225/60r16 winter tires on instead of 225/50r16

Answer
Dear Lynn,
Thank you for using AllExperts.
The 225/60R16 tires are considerably taller than the 225/50R16 tires and should not be used.  Here's a comparison:
(P)225/60R16: 26.85" overall diameter (winter tread)
(P)225/50R16: 24.88" overall diameter
Nearly two inch difference and significantly outside of the (tire) industry guideline for overall diameter difference for replacement tires.  Your odometer and speedometer accuracy will be affected as well as your braking efficiency...and they might rub on the chassis and suspension.
