Tires: Tire size change from OE, mitsubishi montero sport, uniroyal laredo

Question
My 2001 Mitsubishi Montero sport XLS OE tire size is 255/75R16. I can't afford new tires right now and my neighbor has a set of four used Uniroyal Laredo LTL size LT245/75R16 that came off his totaled Chevy pickup. Will these work/fit on my Mitsubishi?
Thanks,
Don

Answer
Don,

First, I think you have the original tire size wrong.  Tire Guides says P255/70R16.  Please check your vehicle tire placard as what I am about to write depends on this information.  The placard is usually located on a doorpost or in the glove box – but sometimes it is located in the trunk or on the fuel filler door.  Be sure to check the tire placard for inflation pressure

Let's assume Tire Guides is correct.  Then in order to carry the same load a a P255/70R16 does, an LT245/75R16 requires 12 psi more pressure.

I think this is quite a jump and not worth the loss of ride.
