Tires: Honda Civic LX 1995, honda civic lx, periodic intervals

Question
I just want to know about the life of tires of Honda Civic. I mean after how many miles should I change. I use the car in Long Island New York. I just brought this car which has old tires. They looks to be in a fair condition, just by looking them they looks to be 50% of there life span. As I dont have any idea when the previous owner of the car got them changed hence I am wondering I need my tires to be changed. What will be your advise. Please suggest.

Thanks

Answer
Sarabh,

Tread wear rates are highly variable.  It is very much dependent on how many turns you make compared to how much you drive in a straight line.  It's also dependent on the pavement of the streets that you frequently drive on.  It's also dependent on the tires that you have.

In other words, there is no way I can predict how much wear life you are going to have unless I do precise measurements at periodic intervals - which is what I suggest you do.  Find a tire dealership that will offer the service of rotating your tires for a modest fee.  Regular rotation will add miles onto the life of your tires and you should have that done between 5K and 8K miles.  While they do the rotation, they should check your tires and give you an update about how long it will be before you need to change them.
