Tires: winter tires, directional tires, winter tires

Question
Can I put  2 directional tires and 2 regular winter tires on the car as long as the directional are mounted according to the designated direction?
Will this combo still be safe?

Answer
Diane,

It is best to have 4 of the same type of tire on your vehicle.  Anything less than that is more prone to problems - and the more different, the more likely there are to be issues.

In your case, there isn't enough information about the tires to say HOW big a problem this might be.  But the general rule is to put the best tires on the rear.  This might mean the tires with the most tread or it might mean the tires with the most potential traction (perhaps the directional tires.

BUT - If your vehicle is a 4X4 or an AWD you MUST have four identical tires with the same amount of wear.
