Question -
I have a 1970 Winny on a Dodge frame with the 413 cubic inch engine. From one start to the next the ignition swithch went bad, I thought anyway! What is happening is that as long as the switch is in the start posistion the motor runs, but as soon as you let go the key it stops. I found out after the engine stopped running it when I was moving it. I ended up putting a stick through the key ring and rotating it around till the thing started, then put a rock on it and drove it another 8-10 miles to where it is now.
Another questioin, why do repair shops say no to me, just becasue I say it's a 1970 model. Come on the basics are still the same aint they.

Hi Ken:

Not sure if I can help with this one, but will give it a try. Here is what I believe the problem to be, based on what you are telling me. Here is why it will stay running as long as you hold the key towards the start position. Normally, when you turn the key to start engine, a full twelve volts are sent to the ignition coil, boosting the starting voltage. When the key is released the voltage is often sent through a voltage resistor, to reduce the voltage across the points. This helps to keep the points in distributor lasting longer. I would look for that resistor, and check the resistance across it, looking for a open circuit. These resistors normally are about 3/4 inch wide, appx 3 inches long, and look like they are made out of ceramic, or other material that will repell heat.

Check on these things, and when you get a chance let me know how you make out.

Answer
Hi Ken,

In my last email to you, I overlooked one of your comments about your rv being a 1970 model and the repair shops telling you they would not work on it because of its age. I totally agree with you. The engine and transmision basic principials are the same on that year model as the new ones. Of course the newer ones have lots more emission controls, electronics, etc. but if you are just having basic engine, transmission, or minor electrical problems, they should have been able to assist you. If you keep looking you will be able to find a good reputable facility to assist you with any work. You may want to look for a good small garage, as they generally have a broad range of experience on various segments of auto repair. I will be awaiting the outcome of the project your now working on.
