Tires: Tire pressure, 2005 toyota highlander, toyota highlander

Question
Hello, what is the right pressure for 215/70 16R goodyear wrangers on a 2005 toyota highlander 4x4. Need to get the tire pressure warning indicator light off. stock recommendations for 225/70 16R at 30lbs.

Answer
Adam,

The 215/70R16's are smaller in load carrying capacity than the original 225/70R16's that originally came on the truck.  In order to get the same load carrying capacity that the original tires had at 30 psi, you have to run the smaller tires at a higher pressure - in this case, 35 psi.

However, if your truck has a direct pressure sensor inside the wheel, then it doesn't know you have smaller tires on the truck.  So the pressure sensor warning light is probably caused by a faulty pressure gauge inside the wheel - and it is set for 30 psi.

But indirect systems react to differences in diameter - and in this case, it could be reacting to the overdeflection of the smaller size.

So set the pressure to 35 psi and see if that fixes the problem.  If not, then the pressure sensor in one of the wheels is bad - and unless the light indicates which one is bad, it could be any or all of them.
