Tires: Tire Compatibility, fwd version, senior citizen

Question
I have a 2003 X-Type Jag with the V8 Sport Package. Tires
that came with it are Michelin 235/50R17. They're pricey and I
was wondering what I could replace the back 2 with that
would work with the front Michelins? I'm a senior citizen and
don't need race-ready tires.

Answer
David,

If I am not mistaken, early models of X type Jaguars are AWD.  However, in 2003 a FWD version was offered.  It is unclear to me if there were any AWD's offered in that model year.

IF yours is an AWD, it is extremely important that all 4 tires be as identical as possible - tire size, make and model, and state of wear.  While I have not heard of any drivetrain failures in Jaguars if this is not followed, there are many incidences where other makes of AWD's have.  So the generalized advice would be appropriate to avoid such an expensive failure.

However, even if yours is a FWD, it is also best to have 4 of the same tire - tire size, make and model, and state of wear.  This minimizes the risk that the difference in traction levels can cause the vehicle to spin out.

The more different the tires are, the worse this could be.  At the very least, the tires should be the same size and speed rating.

I am going to avoid directly answering your question for 2 reasons:

1)  I work for a major tire manufacturer and should not make brand specific comments.

2)  I just don't have enough information to judge what might be appropriate - particularly considering how many tires are out on the open market.  I suggest you discuss this with a local retailer who will be much more in tune with what he has available that might work.
