Tires: Tire replacement, jeep grand cherokee, 2004 grand cherokee

Question
Daughter is the 2nd owner of a  2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4WD, inline 6.

The vehicle has 245/70/16 Goodyears.  When checking the door jam for air pressures - the I.D. tag gave pressures for 225/75/16.  We assumed the wheels and tires were upgraded Possibly at the dealer. The owners manual does list both sizes in the tire section.

Q.  Can we install the 225/75/16 on the existing rims.  I realize bead width is important.

Answer
Lorin,

My book says that one of the optional tire sizes for a 2004 Grand Cherokee 4WD was a P245/70R16 - at 33 psi on the same rim.  Chrysler (and Jeep being a part of Chrysler) does something peculiar.  They list the base tire size on the placard and somewhere else, they will put another sticker that shows the other tire size.  I'm guessing if you look harder you'll find that sticker.

But since there is less than a 1% difference in diameter, it is OK to use the P225/75R16.
