Tires: Tire Wear, inflation pressure, 8k miles

Question
I have a 2003 Tahoe with new (<2 months) tires.  When I changed oil I requested a tire rotation and the technician advised that the rear tires were cupping and if placed on the front it would cause vibration.  He suspects the rear schocks are the culprit, but my vehicle does not ride like the schocks are bad. Any experience with this problem?

Answer
Jim,

Most of the time, "Cupping Wear" is really "Irregular Wear", which is caused by misalignment and aggravated by insufficient inflation pressure and insufficient rotation practices.  So unless you put on a lot of miles in the 2 months, then that is not likely.  In fact, 2 months shouldn't have caused even "Cupping Wear", so I suspect there is something wrong with what the technician said.  I would look at the tires yourself and see if you can even see what he might have been talking about.  If you can't find anything, then ignore what you heard and when the next time you take the car in for an oil change (that would be in about 5K to 8k miles, right?), then look at the tires again to see what is going on.  If the tech says there is a problem and he can't rotate the tires, quiz him a little.
