Tires: Tires on my 4Runner, wheel alignment, side tires

Question
Hi,
I recently bought a 2003 4Runner and have had the tires balanced and rotated along with the 4 wheel alignment because there was a vibration when I hit about 90 kph. After all this work there is still the vibration and recently I noticed that the driver side tires were 265/70-17 and the passenger side tires were 265/65-17. I moved the tires around so that the 65's were in front and the 70's in the rear and the vibration has stopped but there seems to be alot of road noise. Is this set-up O.K. or is it doing driveline damage and/or did the previous set-up do damage?

Thanks,
Matthew

Answer
Mathew,

The problem was the vehicle was out of alignment and that caused the tires to wear irregularly and that caused the vibration.  You fixed the alignment, but since you can't add rubber back onto a tire, you couldn't fix the tires.  Rotating the irregularly worn tires out of the front position only moved the problem to a place where you can't feel it.

I'm not happy about different sized tires on this vehicle, but I think it has nothing to do with the vibration.
