Tires: Tires & Gas Mileage, gas mileage, fuel economy

Question
I read you answer on this topic and do not understand how a narrow tire would get worse gas mileage than a wide one, considering that the narrow tire has less surface area in contact with the road. Please help me understand.

Answer
Dennis,

Ah ...... Mmmmm.....  Could point out where I said that?  Because narrower tires give better fuel economy - all other things being equal.  And, BTW, RR does not have to do with how much contact there is, it has to do with the volume of rubber being displaced.
